Earlier this month, Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan took a tour of Luke’s Place before presenting us with a cheque for $5,000. The donation came from proceeds from the Mayor’s Gala. Thank you, Pickering Mayor’s Gala, for the great support!
Following the tour, reporter Reka Szekely interviewed Luke’s Place staff about our services for DurhamRegion.com.
“We offer direct services to women who’ve been subjected to intimate partner violence in Durham Region, focused on supporting them through the family law process,” said Carol Barkwell, the organization’s executive director. “So that includes right from the beginning supporting women in their exit planning, and in particular safety planning and referrals around that, because it can be quite a dangerous time for women and that’s well documented statistically.”
Our Legal Director Pamela Cross also noted:
“More than 50 per cent, closer to 70 per cent of people — men and women, family violence or not family violence — are going through family court without a lawyer. But of course, that lack of legal representation is much more significant for a woman leaving an abusive partner.”
