Celebrating Commitment and Community: 2026 Ontario Volunteer Service Awards

In April, the Ontario Volunteer Service Awards recognized nearly 5,000 exceptional individuals across the province, people whose generosity, compassion, and dedication strengthen communities every day.

At Luke’s Place, we are proud to celebrate four remarkable volunteers who were honoured this year for their outstanding contributions to supporting women navigating the family law system.

Honouring Our Volunteers

Two of our honourees were able to attend a ceremony held at General Sikorski Hall in Oshawa, where they received their volunteer pins and certificates in person.

  • Blanche Saarinen, Legal Support Volunteer
  • Mesha Donaldson, Pro Bono Lawyer

We also recognize:

  • Julia Moote, Pro Bono Lawyer, who was unable to attend, but whose contributions are deeply valued.
  • Kimberley Gavan, Luke’s Place Board Vice President, who was honoured at a separate ceremony.

Each of these individuals brings dedication, expertise, and compassion to their roles, ensuring the women we serve receive informed, respectful, and empowering support.

During the ceremony, Benjamin St. Louis, Manager of Programs and Planning Unit with the Ontario Honours and Awards Secretariat, shared remarks on behalf of Graham McGregor, Minister of Citizenship and Multiculturalism.

“Your dedication to your vital work at non-profit organizations helps them respond to serve people with dignity and respect fostering resilience and belonging throughout Ontario. I offer sincere thanks for your exceptional service. The 2026 Service Awards recognize the people and individuals who go above and beyond in helping others in strengthening their communities. Your contributions are deeply appreciated, and it is an honour to recognize them now.”

The event also featured remarks from longtime volunteer, Fundraising and Community Engagement Officer with Hearth Place Cancer Support Centre, and First Year International Director with Lion’s Club International, Debbie Dawson, and Lorne Coe, Member of Provincial Parliament for Whitby, both of whom highlighted the vital role volunteers play in building strong connected communities.

Why Volunteer Recognition Matters

Volunteers are the heart of Luke’s Place. From providing legal support to guiding women through complex systems, their contributions make a meaningful difference every single day. Recognition like the Ontario Volunteer Service Awards not only celebrates individual achievements but also shines a light on the collective impact of volunteers across Ontario.

Thank You

To Blanche, Mesha, Julia, Kimberley, and all of our volunteers, your commitment helps ensure that women across Ontario can access the support, information, and advocacy they deserve.

And to all volunteers, this recognition reflects the power of your work and the difference you make.
