International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (IDEVAW) is observed every November 25th. This day is dedicated to raising awareness and taking action to end all forms of violence against women and girls worldwide. It also marks the start of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, a campaign that aims to raise awareness and mobilize action to end violence against women and girls worldwide.
Intimate Partner Violence is an Epidemic: A Call to Action
At Luke’s Place, the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (November 25 – December 10) is a time to raise awareness, share education, and provide critical resources to our community. Our “Did You Know?” campaign highlights key facts about intimate partner violence and the family court system, shining a light on the challenges survivors face and the support that makes a difference.
Each day, we share insights such as:
- Globally, 1 in 3 women experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, most often by an intimate partner.
- In Canada, a woman is killed by her intimate partner every 6 days.
- Indigenous women, racialized women, women with disabilities, and immigrant women are at significantly higher risk.
- Family court decisions can unintentionally expose survivors and their children to continued harm.
Through daily posts, we aim to educate, challenge misconceptions, and inspire action, from supporting survivors, educating community members, and advocating for systemic change. Knowledge is a first step toward justice, and by sharing these facts, we help our community better understand the realities of intimate partner violence and how to respond.
Learn. Share. Act. Together, we can amplify survivors’ voices and work toward a world where women do not have to choose between safety and their legal rights.
Today, we primarily reflect on the scope of intimate partner violence and reaffirm our dedication to building a legal system that listens to, protects, and empowers survivors.
Together, we can end the epidemic of intimate partner violence.
