New Worker Training: Strengthening Family Court Support Workers Across Ontario

Since 2011, Luke’s Place has led training for Ontario’s FCSWs, funded originally by the Ministry of the Attorney General and now by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services. FCSWs play a critical role in supporting survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) as they navigate the family court system.

In March, we hosted a two-day New Worker Training, bringing together 28 FCSWs who are new to the role or in the early years of their work. The training created space not only for learning, but for connection, reflection, and the sharing of tools and resources for continued growth and collaboration.

Over the two days, participants engaged in a mix of presentations, group discussions, and interactive activities. We also shared practical toolkits and resources designed to support their ongoing work with survivors.

Together, we explored a wide range of topics essential to the FCSW role, including:

  • Violence against women and Family Law
  • Different kinds of relationships
  • Domestic contracts
  • Supporting clients working with or without lawyers
  • Services connected to family court
  • The family court process
  • Parenting issues
  • Financial issues
  • Safety planning
  • The active role of FCSW in accompaniments

Family Court Support Workers are often a vital point of connection for survivors, helping them understand their options, prepare for court, access services and prioritize their safety and well-being throughout the legal process.

We are honoured to contribute to building a network of FCSWs who are knowledgeable, compassionate, and equipped to respond to the complex realities survivors face within the family court system.

Just as importantly, this training marked the beginning, or continuation, of relationships among workers across the province. We look forward to continuing this work through our community of practice and supporting both new and experienced FCSWs as they share knowledge, navigate challenges, and strengthen their collective impact.

Here is what people had to say:

“Very useful and supportive”

“Invaluable!!”

“Very important”

“Great training! Lots of useful information and resources”

“Everything was useful and important to learn to help us do our work properly”

We are grateful to everyone who joined us and look forward to continuing to learn and grow together.
