Victim and Survivors of Crime Week: Supporting Survivors Beyond the Crisis

Each May, Canada marks Victims and Survivors of Crime Week, a time to recognize the women subjected to intimate partner violence and the ongoing impacts of crime. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the systems those women must navigate, and the gaps that continue to put their safety at risk.

For many women who have been subjected to intimate partner violence, the harm does not end when the relationship ends. Instead, it often continues through the family law system, where they must make critical decisions about parenting arrangements, financial security, and protection from ongoing abuse.

Far too often, women are forced to navigate these complex legal processes without representation. This can mean facing an abusive former partner in court, managing intimidation or coercion, and making life-altering decisions without access to timely legal advice.

At Luke’s Place, we support women at this exact intersection, where safety, justice, and family law meet. Through our Pro Bono Legal Clinic and support services, we provide trauma-informed, survivor-centred legal support to help women understand their options, protect their rights, and prioritize their safety.

During Victims and Survivors of Crime Week, we are asking our community to act.

Your support helps ensure that survivors can access urgent legal advice when they need it most. It helps a woman prepare for court, understand her rights, and take steps to protect herself and her children.

Survivors should not have to navigate the legal system alone.

Together, we can help ensure they don’t have to.
