Voices of Change: Women Shaping Law Reform

With International Women’s Day approaching on March 8th, we take this time to recognize and celebrate women’s and girls’ social, economic, cultural, and political achievements. It’s also a time to raise awareness of the progress made towards achieving gender equality and ending gender-based violence (GBV) and reflect on the work remaining to be done.

Over the course of the month, we will recognize and celebrate women’s achievements in shaping laws and improving systemic responses to GBV. Given the work we do at Luke’s Place, our particular focus will be on advocacy work directed at changing the family law legal system to better address the needs of women who have been subjected to intimate partner violence. We also want to raise awareness of all the remaining work and highlight some of the key issues Luke’s Place will focus on going forward when it comes to improving women’s access to justice in family court.

Women who have been subjected to intimate partner violence are the experts in their own experiences. In all of our advocacy work at Luke’s Place, we are informed by the women we work with each and every day and what they share with us about their experiences while navigating family court after separation.

Women have the power to make legislative change, they just need decision-makers and lawmakers to listen.
