Celebrating National Volunteer Week 2024
We love our volunteers!
April 14-20, 2024 is National Volunteer Week, an opportunity to highlight the importance of every volunteer and each contribution they make. Please join us in celebrating our incredible volunteers on social media!
Just as we rely on our funders and donors to help fund our organization, we rely on the leadership of our board of directors, the compassion and commitment of our legal support volunteers and students, and the expertise and dedication of our family law pro bono lawyers to deliver our services. Our volunteers play a critical role in helping us support survivors through the family law process. At the same time, our volunteers learn valuable skills and are part of a community working to end violence against women and their children.
At Luke’s Place, we currently have four key areas where volunteers play a critical role in our work: our board of directors, our pro bono lawyers in our legal clinic, our legal support volunteers for court accompaniments with women and our law and social work students who assist our organization in a number of different ways.
Board of Directors
The Luke’s Place Board of Directors supports our work and provides mission-based leadership and strategic governance. Our Board meets on bi-monthly basis, with committees meeting on alternate months. New members are welcomed each year at the Annual General Meeting. We’re currently looking for new members to join our Board!
Ontario Family Law Lawyers
We offer several volunteer opportunities for Ontario family law lawyers:
- Donate pro bono time to our legal advice services by volunteering with our Legal Clinic, which provides free family law summary advice to Ontario women subjected to abuse. Clinic appointments are offered both virtually and in-person.
- Provide public legal education to women by speaking on a topic at one of our virtual legal information sessions.
- Assist us in preparing or updating resources for women or support workers throughout the province on various family law topics.
- Get involved in our law reform and advocacy work.
Legal Support Volunteers
Legal Support Volunteers work directly and independently with women who need support during a court appearance or during a lawyer appointment. They also provide support during group sessions and information workshops.
Student Placements
We accept full-year social work student placements that start in September. Students receive practical training and experience in supporting women and their children as they navigate the family law process. We also accept law student volunteers who are interested in getting some practical legal experience and build their knowledge base about issues of intimate partner violence and family law.
