Emergency Motions Toolkit
An emergency motion can be a vital step towards ensuring the safety women and children subjected to intimate partner violence (IPV). Yet many survivors enter the family court system without the information or support they need. As women often apply to Family Court at a time of crisis, it is not unusual for many to be overwhelmed by the number of forms and the amount of information required to complete the forms.
Luke’s Place created the Emergency Motions Toolkit to support advocates working with survivors about how to create effective emergency motions for a variety of different situations. Updated in 2022, the toolkit offers clear, practical guidance for navigating the emergency motion process in Ontario.
The toolkit includes:
- Emergency contacts and safety planning tips
- Step-by-step guidance on applying for an emergency motion
- Commentary on key court forms
- A family history questionnaire
- Instructions for unrepresented women filing motions
You will also learn:
- When or if an Emergency Motion may be appropriate;
- Required forms and how to fill them out;
- Information required to support the Emergency Motion;
- Steps in the process and how to prepare women for it.
